Camarilla Group works a great deal in the area of social value / corporate social responsibility. We help our clients explain what social value is, its importance to communities and potential business growth, and we are constantly highlighting the work of our clients and their impact across Wales and the wider UK.
But we don’t just talk about it, we act on it. Our Director, Paul Shackson, is now volunteering with the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) https://wrc.wales/ offering support with its corporate engagement and helping identify funding stream opportunities, particularly around the WRC’s work on employability.
He commented: “It’s all very well banging the drum of social value in Camarilla’s day to day work with journalists, the public, politicians and businesses, but I felt I needed to do more and to put into practice what I was preaching.
“To support the Welsh Refugee Council with its vitally important work is an absolute honour and I’m really looking forward to trying to make a difference wherever I can, no matter how small. I would encourage any business to look where it can offer support to charities and community organisations and to bring their own clients and supply chain on that journey. Don’t think of it as a ‘nice to do’ exercise, it should be a key part of your business strategy moving forward.”
New Accessible Toilet Signage Unveiled in Support of People Living with Hidden Illnesses
Camarilla has this month supported Pelican & Respond Healthcare in launching new signage to be used on accessible public toilets, aimed at educating the public and garnering greater understanding of the needs of people living with hidden illnesses such as a stoma; and Cardiff Council is the first Local Authority in Wales to pilot the signage.
Camarilla secured widespread media coverage including this on ITV Wales
Designed and developed by students at Cardiff Metropolitan University studying BA Graphic Communication Level 6, and as part of their Design for Real Life project, the students have created new signage under the banner #BeTheChange. The signage, which is a broken circle aimed at encouraging entry is designed to be inclusive and supportive of all people living with hidden illnesses, be it Alzheimer’s, a stoma, anxiety or any other of the conditions accounting for the 92% of people who need to use an accessible toilet but don’t have a visible illness.
The drive to create new signage came from a group of people from across South Wales living with a stoma, an opening in the abdomen that can be connected to either your digestive or urinary system to allow waste (urine or faeces) to be diverted out of your body and collected in a bag after part or all of the bowel is removed due to disease or obstruction. They found there was ‘a lack of understanding’, and ‘a need to educate’ society in order to ‘avoid embarrassing situations’. They therefore formed an action group, #BeTheChange Voices, joined forces and called for changes to be made within society, with the help of Cardiff based Pelican Healthcare, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of disposable medical products in the UK and Ireland healthcare markets, and its sister company Respond Healthcare, specialists in stoma and continence care, providing a prescription dispensing service throughout the UK.
Delivering Social Value = A Successful Business
The month of May has been a busy one for Camarilla Group’s client ANTZ, a leader in social value, https://antzuk.com/ with a presentation to members of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) Wales.
Camarilla Group secured the opportunity, allowing Jen Pemberton, CEO of ANTZ to explain to members what social value is, how it’s measured, and its importance to the successful growth of a business.
Approximately 80 members joined the discussion where they were brought up to speed on how to deliver social value and bring about positive change in the communities in which they operate, something that is of crucial importance to winning future contracts with the public sector.

The Insider Track on Pelican & Respond Healthcare
Camarilla Group was delighted to recently arrange a briefing between new Pelican & Respond Healthcare Managing Director Stuart Welland and Douglas Friedli, Editor of Wales Business Insider magazine.
Due to Covid-19, Stuart has taken on the role during one of the most stressful times in the history of the business, but thanks to the monumental efforts of his team has still managed to deliver record manufacturing output, develop new products, oversee installation of solar panels as part of its push to support Cardiff Council’s OnePlanet strategy, and drive the #BetheChange campaign aimed at educating the public on what people living with an invisible illness face on a daily basis.
His discussion with Douglas is in the February / March issue of Insider!
